5 Highly Effective Ways To Engage New Hires

Happy employees, equal productive employees, and this starts by engaging your new hires from day one.

“The lack of attention paid to a new hires is mind-boggling. What a wasted opportunity to make a new team member feel included or appreciated,” – Chip and Dan Heath

Imagine you are getting ready for a first date. You are nervous and spend hours making sure you look and feel just right. However, the second you arrive the person you are meeting with is on a phone call and for the next 20 minutes makes you sit there while they, “Take care of business.”

Great first impression right? Talk about someone who cares.

Whether intentional or not, this is what companies do day in and day out with their new hires.

They preach, “employees first,” yet from day one treat employees more like an inconvenience than a valued team member.

Our goal at Tradler is simple – decrease your employee turnover by improving your employee engagement. And this starts from day one.

Below are 5 ways to make your new hires feel valued on their first day.

1. Be expecting them:

Now we know this step sounds a bit basic, but basic steps lead to extraordinary heights.

We have all experienced a time when we started a new job and we were immediately shuffled into a corner while the secretary scrambled to figure out who you are and what in the world she can do with you.

This needs to stop. The day a new hire starts, may just be a normal Tuesday to you, but it is a huge day for the new hire and needs to be treated as such.

If you tell the new hire to be at the office at 9am, make it a point that the person they are going to be reporting to is ready and waiting with a smile and an outreached hand.

2. Acknowledge them:

The first words out of every managers mouth when meeting a new hire should always be, “We are very fortunate you made the decision to work with us and are very excited for you to be a part of our family.”

People may take a job for a paycheck, but they stay because they not only feel valued, they are told they are valuable.  And again, being proactive in doing this is key.

3. Introduce them to all team members in a nonintrusive way:

Tell us if you can relate to this? You arrive to the office and after waiting for 30 minutes for someone you are immediately shuffled around to a ton of cubicles and introduced to each team member. However, uinstead of getting a chance to get to know them, you feel like you are interrupting them?

Sound about right?

Now how about this option?

You arrive to work and are immediately greeted by your new manager with a smile and a kind word. Then taken into a meeting room where for 20 minutes you share coffee and handshakes with the members of your team.

20 minutes and connections are made and nerves are settled.

4. Make sure their workstation is ready to go:

Have you ever started a new job and spent the first few hours watching the backside of an IT person set up your computer station?

Not exactly the view you were expecting right?

New hires want to see from day one how they can make a difference. And this starts with allowing them to get comfortable with the tools they will be using to make said difference from the start.

5. Walk them out of the office on their first day:

When the clock strikes time to go, take the time to go with them to their car and thank them again for making the decision to work here. “Man, we are lucky to have you,” always works.

Again this takes all of 5 minutes, but the impression lasts.

Companies make hires because they have a problem to solve and the faster a new hire feels valued, the faster that problem will be solved. So do what you can to make your next hire feel comfortable, your bottom line with thank you for it.
